Item #1 I will be blogging more starting now

Item #2 I have discovered myself this year.  After mentoring with the amazing Kirsten Lewis I have learned so much about searching for the light and looking for the moments in a session.

My whole photography career I have loved the candid moments from every session.  I tried so hard to offer those sweet posed pictures that every client craves but I couldn’t resist keeping those moments I shot in between.

I couldn’t give those moments up because those are the ones I am drawn to.  Why can’t we all love them?  From this point on it will be the focus of my sessions.  We will play.  We will run around.  Your husbands will actually love this because they get to play the whole time instead of staring at a camera.  Your kids won’t even know that they are at a photography session.  We play so much they just think I am someone your hired to play with them.

Starting the fall of 2016 I will be offering 1 hour documentary family sessions.  We will spend about 15 minutes doing a posed portrait of family and each child and then the rest of the session we will play.  If you are planning on a beach session we will not be focused on the sunset but rather your family and how they interact.  Give me a chance to just shoot you guys having fun and I promise you will love it.

Here is a session I did recently where the family gave me full control.  If you are interested in a session like this sign up for my newsletter and hear more about what 2017 holds as well as Holiday mini sessions.

This was my first wedding at Double J Farms in Panama City, FL and I was so excited to see what the venue held.  Candace and Tim planned their beautiful wedding with lace, flowers, boots, smores, games, candy and everything fun.

When I arrived on the day of the wedding and met all of the family it was very clean everyone loved the bride and groom and all of their 5 kids.  Double J has a beautiful place for both the bride and groom to get ready so I was able to bounce back and forth between the two.  Little boys were getting their bow ties on straight, sweet girls were checking their curls in the wall of mirrors, adults were running around pinning flowers, gathering last minute details…not one person was super nervous.  Instead of nerves I saw smiles.  With that type of energy you know this couple is loved by all.

Staring the day the guests were greeted by this beautiful entry setup.

What a gorgeous location… Love the pics and kids. Thanks for sharing these precious moments over here.

Try something new with your family pictures and hire a photographer to document your whole day - Get in those cute candids instead always being the one who takes them

Documentary Family Photography : A family session where a photographer follows your family happenings without interrupting any moments or altering anything to capture a photo.

For a while now I have photographed families like most other photographers.  We pick a date, time and location.  I might help with outfit choices.  At the session I would pose several different family shots as well as individuals of kids and then if time allowed I would shoot candids.  Throughout my career the candids were ALWAYS my favorite.  There is this perception of a perfect family picture and it is either everyone smiling at the camera or lately we have the family grouped together but laughing, walking, talking, playing together in a lifestyle type of shot.  There is nothing wrong with those pictures, but I just needed something new and more in line with what I liked to shoot.

Enter the Day in the Life session.  This is a documentary style of photography where a photographer comes to a family’s home or meets them on vacation and documents their day without interruption from morning until night.  It sounds intimidating, but after everyone gets used to the photographer being around the magic happens.  Kids start to relax and their personalities shine.  We can capture their absolute best and joyous moments down to those timeouts in the corner.  You think you don’t want a picture of the bad moments but those memories are just as important as the good.  Mom and dad are usually the ones with the phone or camera snapping for social media but with a Day in the Life session you are in those moments as well.  No more kids playing at the beach with mommy’s toes in the shot to prove she was there.  Now you are there.

At the end of the day, an entire album of pictures is ready for your shelf.  Bring it down every year to see how the family dynamic has changed.  Book a session every year or every other year to continue documenting the change.  Don’t wait until you feel like life is perfect to document it.  Think back to your parent’s house where they had physical albums to pick up and flip through.  Don’t you love showing those pictures to your kids?  Who is to say that we will have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter…etc around in 20 years to show our grandkids.  Take pictures that matter, or better yet hire a professional to get all of those important details for you.

A couple of weeks ago I fell in love with this style with my first family.  We did a half day session and I showed up just as everyone was waking up.  This Saturday morning they cooked breakfast, played with toys, made Easy Bake cookies and played outside.  6 hours went by so quickly and now they have a beautiful morning to remember forever.

Hold on to your hats…..there are a lot of pictures coming.  Just think of this in your album and this was only half a day.

You can hire a professional photographer for anything even a day at the ball field. I recently went with the Moore family to one of their sons’ ball games. They in the lucky year where 2 boys are on the same team and dad is one of the coaches. Grandpa was even the ump that day….he called everything very fair.

This team was spectacular. I forgot how much fun little league is. During my elementary days I would switch between softball and soccer each season. My dad taught me how to catch high outfield fly balls by having me catch car keys with my bare hands. If I could cradle keys in my bare hands I could catch a softball right?!?! I love the game and it was so much fun watching these kids so passionate about their sport.

Towards the end of the game our team was was on the field and the batting team had a nice hit to the outfield. The boys rallied and hit their cutoffs to home plate but the catcher dropped the ball so the runs counted. Fast forward 2 innings and the same scene was playing out. This time a beautiful throw hit the catcher’s glove and he held onto it and with great shock in his face he saved the day by holding off the tie run. GAME OVER GAME WON!! I loved it and I caught that game winning play.

Location: Holy Nativity, Panama City, FL

I have photographed their maternity, newborn and now baptism.  To see their lives blossom in front of my camera is a true perk of the job.

Baptism is such a sweet and simple ceremony full of love and family.  There are only a handful of people there and as a photographer I am in heaven watching all the interactions and moments.  This little church had the most beautiful picture and stained glass windows.  I was able to use all natural light during the whole ceremony.  It is always my preference to try not to interrupt a moment with a flash of light.  Each photographer has their own philosophy on this….for me natural light as much as possible.

Little G came in a onesie so before his baptism they slipped him into a baptism gown that had been worn by several cousins before him.  Each had their name embroidered on the inside of the gown.  Such a sweet tradition.
