Newborn sessions are very sweet and so amazing when the time is taken to have them done. Let me start out by saying they are very time consuming. Sometimes it takes 4-5 hours to get all the pictures done. Babies need to be asleep, warm and comfy to be able to place them in the positions needed.
A lifestyle newborn session is not the typical baby in the blanket on a basket type of shot. With a lifestyle session, the photographer may come to your house or the hospital and take pictures of the family interacting with baby. Shots will be more of baby laying in their crib or bassenet or baby wrapped in a blanket on mom and dad’s bed. Baby may be snuggled with on the couch or sitting on dad’s lap as he watches TV. The idea is to present an editorial of the baby’s first days..jpg)
With these lifestyle sessions, we use items that baby has of their own. Maybe Grandma made a special blanket or the shoes you wore as a baby have been passed down. On top of pictures of baby, the baby’s room can be captured. All the work you put into decorating the room will be documented.
If you don’t want to use your house, you can call for the photographer to come to the hospital. Call them after you have fed baby and he/she is getting sleepy. Pictures of baby will be sleeping in the mom’s arms or snuggled in someone’s lap. If you want this option, bring some items in your hospital bag to have pictures with.
The most important thing to remember is that a newborn session needs to happen before baby is 10 days old. Around that time, they become more awake and harder to get sleepy pictures. They also start to develop baby acne or cradle cap around that time. The closer to birth, the better. We know as photographers that you are sleep deprived and life is not normal at that time, so it is key to know ahead of time what to expect when you ask for newborn pictures.
